Green Tourism Policy
Clippesby Hall is a camping and
touring park set in 34 acres of natural park and woodland
located in the Norfolk Broads National Park area. We also offer
self-catering accommodation ranging from 1 bedroom apartments to
our 4 bedroom Coach House sleeping up to eight people.
We are proud to be members of the
Green Tourism Business Scheme, and have been awarded a ‘Gold’
rating for our work in developing and promoting a sustainable
tourism experience for our visitors.
Over the past four years we have
taken the following actions:
-
Introduced an active recycling
campaign around the park for glass, cans, plastic, paper and
cardboard that has achieved significant reductions in refuse
collections
-
Installed a solar water heating
system for our swimming pool, which together with a new cover
has reduced our reliance on oil-fired heating
-
Researched, written and promoted
our own guide to exploring the Broads National Park in a
sustainable way, supporting independent local businesses and
emphasizing the benefits of walking, cycling and canoeing
-
Changed the focus of our
marketing and booking process away from print media and towards
the use of the internet, dramatically reducing the demand for
our brochures
-
Replaced almost all of the light
bulbs around the park, in our toilet and shower facilities and
in our self-catering accommodation with the most appropriate
low-energy option, including the installation of motion
activated lights in our main toilet and shower facilities
-
Installed more efficient
push-operated taps in our toilet and shower facilities to reduce
water usage, replaced all external taps around the park to
minimise water wastage through drips, installed water butts to
collect rainwater, connected our reservoir to our own well to
collect excess water and enabled a mobile facility to use this
collected water around the park
-
Included a number of locally
sourced meat and fish products on our food menus and stock
exclusively local draught ales and ciders in our bar and
restaurant, together with a range of organic, Fairtrade wines
-
Stock a number of Fairtrade and
eco-friendly products in our shop
-
Designed and installed new play
equipment, cycle trail and on-site activities to enable visitors
to enjoy more of their stay with us without leaving the park or
using their cars
We are the only touring park in
Norfolk to be awarded a '5 pennant' rating by the AA, and in
2009 were rated as the AA’s Campsite of the Year for Britain and
Ireland. This award was in addition to winning the 'Best Holiday
Park' category in the Norfolk Tourism Awards 2006, being voted
the ‘Best Park’ in the East of England ‘Awards for Excellence’
in 2007 and being granted a ‘5 star’ rating by VisitBritain.
We are working in conjunction
with the Broads Authority as a European Charter Park Partner in
connection with the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism,
and the main focus of our activities is on encouraging
sustainability in respect of the interaction between tourism
visitors, local businesses and the community, as well as the
environment.
As supporters of the David
Bellamy Conservation Scheme in conjunction with the BH&HPA, we
have been in receipt of a ‘Gold’ award for many years, and in
2009 were awarded a Special Distinction award.
We are corporate sponsors of the
Norfolk Wildlife Trust and members of the Broads Tourism Forum,
the Welcome Walkers and Welcome Cyclists scheme, support
Sustrans in the form of donations for small repairs undertaken
on visitors cycles and promote information on and access to the
National Cycle Network.
We have further activities
planned for the future, including:
-
completing the installation of
motion-activated lighting in our second main shower block for
the summer holidays in 2010 after trialling this in our main
facility
-
introducing a scheme for visitors
to commit to as many car-free days as possible during their
holiday, rewarded by the dedication of a newly planted tree or
bird/bat box around the park, aiming for a total of 500 car-free
days during the 2010 summer holidays
-
switching our cleaning materials
to environmentally friendly supplies and moving to a green
tariff for electricity, two issues that have proved more
difficult for us, by the start of the 2011 season
-
researching and writing a further
guide to exploring the Broads National Park, based on walking,
for the start of the 2011 season
-
building a new energy efficient,
eco-friendly Reception, Information Centre, Coffee Shop and Bike
Hire centre during the winter of 2011/12, replacing our most
energy inefficient building
